5 Reasons You Should Grow Your Email List
Have Control of Your Contacts
If all of your followers are on social media, what happens if you get banned or if you account gets compromised? You lose them. You need to have a list that you own and can take with you.
Every day, people lose access to their social media accounts. Your email list is the best way to reach out to your customers and let them know you are still open for business.
Build Your Brand Following
How do you know your customers are going to come back? You don’t, not really. Just because someone buys from you once, what are the odds they will come back again?
When people sign up to your email, text or loyalty program list, they opt in for follow up contact. That means they want to hear from you. Every time you reach out, whether it’s to share a sale, upcoming event, or other updates, you are reminding them that you are there. That reminder keeps your brand top of mind.
Bigger List, Bigger Reach
A big list isn’t the most important metric. Sure, it’s important but an engaged list is more important. The bigger the list, the more people you will reach.
Let’s say you have a list of 5,000 people who have opted in to get information from you. For many small businesses or nonprofits, that’s a great number. It’s important to know that when you send a message to your subscribers, some people won’t open it. Hopefully, you have an engaged list of people who will open your email, and act on the information and make a purchase, sign up for an event, or read your blog post. You need to grow your email list with full understanding that not everyone will be engaged.
Learn About Your Customers
Your list is the best way to stay connected to your audience. Sending messages to your list will tell you a lot about them. You will learn who is engaged, what type of messages they respond to, which call to actions they click and more. You can also ask your audience questions or send them polls.
Segment Your Customers
Once you grow your list and learn about your audience, you can segment your audience. Segmentation is dividing your audience into subgroups.
If you have a boutique, you might divide your list into groups based on what they buy, how much they spend, or how often they shop. If you are a nonprofit, you might divide your list into giving levels, location, or areas of interest.
As you grow your email list, you can build that information into your customer profiles. This allows you to send your customers the information they will be most likely to open.
On My Plant-Based Family, I segment subscribers many different ways, including the types of links they click, the Freebie they used to subscribe, and purchases.
